Intersections: A Symposium on Experimental Chinese Photography, Video and Film

During three panel discussions, speakers consider experimental photography, video and film from China and explore the ongoing cross-fertilization between art forms, thematic overlaps, and the role of performance in recent photo-based work. The program is presented in conjunction with the exhibitions Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China at the Smart Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Yang Fudong: Five Films at the Renaissance Society. Featured speakers include artists Rong Rong, Miao Xiaochun, Lin Tianmiao, and Qiu Zhijie; filmmaker Jia Zhangke; curators Wu Hung (Smart Museum/University of Chicago), Christopher Phillips (International Center of Photography, NY), Melissa Chiu (Asia Society, NY), and Hamza Walker (Renaissance Society); and art and film historians Jason McGrath (University of Minnesota), Jennifer Purtle (University of Chicago), Berenice Reynaud (CalArts), and Jerome Silbergeld (Princeton University).
