- Su Friedrich is a New York-based filmmaker whose films have won many awards, including the Grand Prix at the Melbourne Film Festival and Outstanding Documentary at Outfest. Friedrich has received fellowships from the Rockefeller and Guggenheim Foundations as well as numerous grants from the Jerome Foundation, NYFA, NYSCA and ITVS, and in 1995 she received the Cal Arts/Alpert Award. She currently teaches film & video production at Princeton University. Hide and Seek (1996, 63m) explores the world of lesbian adolescence. Set in the 60's, it follows Lou, a twelve year old girl, as she daydreams in a treehouse, wins a rock throwing contest and is horrified to discover her best friend is taking an interest in earrings and boys. Completeing the picture are clips from a wide array of old scientific and educational films which blend seamlessly into the beautiful black and white images of Lou's world. With this film Friedrich has "woven a rich and provocative tapestry that assaults complacent assumptions about pubescent desire and lesbian identity" (Yvonne Rainer).
