Discussants: Michael Barker (Co-President, SONY Pictures Classics), Wu Hung (Art History and East Asian Languages & Civilizations), Judith Zeitlin (East Asian Languages & Civilizations), Tang Xiaobing (East Asian Languages & Civilizations), and Yip Man Fung (Cinema & Media Studies). Moderator: Miriam Hansen (English and Cinema & Media Studies). The panel will discuss such issues as: House of Flying Daggers and its relationship to Hero, and of both to Zhang's supposedly more critical earlier work; Zhang's claim that the film represents an "Asian response" to Crouching Tiger and the role of the martial arts genre in articulating at once a national and transnational, local and diasporic Chinese cinema; the context of contemporary Chinese art and cultural politics.
