Description:

Box of Treasures (Chuck Olin, 1983)- In the late 19th century, the Canadian Government outlawed the Potlatch and removed ritual objects from the possession of the Kwakwaka'wakw. In 1980, after years of negotiating for their rightful return, the U'mista Cultural Centre opened its doors to receive and house those cultural treasures seized decades earlier. Box of Treasures documents the cultural significance of these events for today's Kwakwaka'wakw. Since its release, Box of Treasures has been used as a model for aboriginal cultural revitalization.

I'Tusto: To Rise Again (Cranmer, 2000)- On August 29, 1997 the ‘Namgis First Nations of Alert Bay was rocked to its core. The Bighouse where their traditional ceremonies are held was engulfed in flames. The community stood and wept. This powerful documentary recounts the events resulting from this horrific act of arson.

Ms. Cranmer will be at the screening to discuss her own projects as well as events that are taking place in her First Nations community in Alert Bay, Canada.
