The King of Masks

Sunday, November 12, 2006 - 7:00pm
Made at the height of the international craze for Chinese art house films, The King of Masks combines the displaying of folk China then in vogue with the "humanistic melodrama" tradition Wu and his generation of filmmakers perfected in early 1980s. The King of Masks tells the story of an old itinerant performer who craves a male heir to his art but buys a girl from swindling human traffickers in 1920's western China. Winner of the Best Director Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival, 1996. (Wu Tianming, 1995, 101 minutes, 35mm print)
