In conjunction with the Graduate Cinema Conference on April 4-5, the Film Studies Center and the Experimental Film Club present several programs devoted to essay films and experimental documentaries.
In Praise of Love (Jean-Luc Godard, 2001, 97 minutes) is a mesmerizing and lyrical meditation on love, and the role history and memory play in shaping human consciousness, past and present. Structured in two parts, the film opens in paris, where Edgar is attempting to develop a film about love. During the casting process he discovers a woman that he's sure he's met before. In the second part, Edgar interviews an elderly couple - former Resistance fighters - only to find that their memories are being bought up for a Hollywood film.
