- Kaji leaves for Manchuria to accept a job as a labor supervisor to exempt him from military service. Kaji attempts to improve the workers conditions but he is prevented by the pit supervisor Okazaki his only sympathy comes from the foreman Okishima, his assistant Chen, and his wife Michiko. An outbreak is instigated by his enemies after which Kaji is arrested and charged with conspiracy. He is released without explanation only to receive his call to military service.

- Second part of the The Human Condition trilogy. Kaji joins the army and, distressed by the suffering of his fellow recruits, attempts to speak out against this cruelt. He is suspected of having Communist tendencies as is his friend Shinjo. One day Shinjo tries to escape and Kaji is injured when he tries to rescue him. After leaving the hospital, he is sent to a different unit where he is promoted. Finally, after the surrender of Germany, Russia turns its attention to the small Japanese units and Kaji and his troops are attacked.

- Notes:
- Third part of The Human Condition trilogy. In the face of the sudden Russian invasion, Kaji and a handful of survivors fight their way to southern Manchuria. Murder, treachery, and other vicious crimes are rampant as the Japanese forces retreat. Kaji intends to fight his way back to his wife but is taken prisoner by the Russians and held in a prison camp. Here he learns at first hand that his ideas about Socialism are a far cry from reality. Finally Kaji escapes and attempts to make his way back to his wife who has been waiting for him. Eventually he is unable to continue, he falls and is enveloped in the falling snow.
