- As children, white, middle class Miguel and black slum-dweller Jorge meet through their parents' music, and the relationship gels during a lengthy incarceration in the remote Ilha Grande jail in the 1970s - Miguel for political activism; Jorge for theft. Cut to the present day, the pair meet once again, Miguel now a senator and Jorge a favela drug lord. Meanwhile, Miguel's daughter is perversely pursuing a relationship with one of Jorge's gun-happy enforcers.
