Notes:
4K digital restoration from the Cineteca di Bologna. On July 5, 1950, Salvatore Giuliano, Italy’s Most Wanted criminal, is found shot dead in a dusty courtyard. Who killed him, and why? In this Citizen Kane-style investigative portrait, Francesco Rosi sought to depict not so much Giuliano himself as the society from which he sprang. Filming in exact locations and using court reports as primary source material, Rosi mainly cast local Sicilians, some of whom knew Giuliano personally. The only professional actors were Frank Wolff and Salvo Randone. Supplemental features include: THE FILMMAKER AND THE LABYRINTH, Roberto Andò’s docuentary of Rosi’s career, featuring interviews with Rosi, Martin Scorsese, and others; Francesco Rosi on Salvatore Giuliano, an interview with Rosi; The Sicilian Robin Hood, an interview with Giuliano’s nephew Giuseppe; Salvatore Giuliano and the Mafia, an interview with journalist and Sicilian Mafia expert Attilio Bolzoni; theatrical trailer; and an information booklet featuring writing on the film, an annotated synopsis, and contemporary reviews, available at checkout.
