Fed up with exploitation by team owners, Negro League pitcher Bingo Long forms an independent roster of all-star players and sets out to “seize the means of production.” With its own “all-star” cast, including James Earl Jones, Richard Pryor, and the irresistibly charming Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars’ Lando Calrissian), this barnstorming comedy is a monument to Black baseball heroes of the 1930s and a timely exploration of labor, race, and the “show business” of spectator sports.
Co-produced by Motown Productions and Universal Pictures, the film is directed by John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) and features a soundtrack of period-styled music written by William Goldstein and performed by Grammy-winner Thelma Houston. Presented with an introduction from Professor Jacqueline Stewart. (John Badham, USA, 1976, 111 minutes, DCP)
This event is free and open to the public. Doors open thirty minutes prior to showtime.
