eXistenZ — David Cronenberg’s first original script since Videodrome — is a prescient film that intrinsically understands the moral hazard of a populace no longer sharing a consensus reality. In the near future, video game design has evolved to a point where games can biologically interact with players via a fleshy controller that connects to their bodies with umbilical-like power cords.
When leading game designer Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is attacked by an anti-game zealot during a demo of her new virtual-reality game “eXistenZ,” she narrowly escapes with her publicist Ted Pikul (Jude Law) and the now-damaged master copy of the game. After Ted reluctantly agrees to test the game, the pair enter the virtual world of eXistenZ, but it is not long before they are no longer certain where the violent gameplay ends and reality begins. (David Cronenberg, United Kingdom, France, Canada, 1999, 97 minutes, 35mm)
This event is free and open to the public. Doors open thirty minutes prior to showtime.
