This tender portrait of late-1960s French youth stars Louis Garrel as François, a 20-year-old Parisian struggling through the fires of revolutionary promise and their smoldering remains. Written and directed by his father, the celebrated auteur Phillippe Garrel, the film's shimmering black and white tones illuminate Paris moments before cities across the world lighted up with radical promise and burning cars.
As 1968 gave way to 1969, it was still too early to gauge whether idealism would survive such a crushing defeat. And while the film's desperately sad finale indicates that Philippe Garrel knows the truth of '68 better than most and might have suffered a crisis in faith in the years since, this magnificent film is itself proof that all was not lost. Les Amants Réguliers/Regular Lovers is presented as part of the 2009 Tournées Festival of New French Film at the Film Studies Center. You are invited to spend five Friday nights this winter watching a conversation unfold between the contemporary work of classic French New Wave directors Garrel, Resnais, Godard and recent films by Honoré and Desplechin, members of the "new, new wave."
