The Sword of Granada 3-D

When:
Friday, January 17, 2025 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Where:
Logan Center Screening Room, 201
Description:

Riotously funny and featuring several inventive three-dimensional sight gags, The Sword of Granada (El corazón y la espada) is a true adventure yarn, with a quartet of Spaniards infiltrating a Moor-occupied castle, each with their own motivations. Don Pedro de Rivera (Cesar Romero, having almost as much fun here as with his Joker from TV’s Batman) and Ponce de León (Tito Junco) sneak into the castle seeking revenge—and maybe the secret to everlasting youth—finding first the feisty swordswoman Lolita (Katy Jurado, High Noon) and her priest companion (Miguel Ángel Ferriz) also skulking about the stone hallways. Co-directed by Edward Dein, who co-wrote Jacques Tourneur’s The Leopard Man, and Disney animator-turned-director Carlos Véjar Jr, this swashbuckling tale of Moorish Spain is a real treat for those open to its adventure serial pacing and set-bound charms.

Restored by the 3-D Film Archive from the original Left/Right 35mm camera negatives, The Sword of Granada is the first 3-D feature shot in Mexico and has not been seen in its original stereoscope format since 1954. (Edward Dein & Carlos Véjar Jr., Mexico, 1954, 80 minutes, 3-D DCP)

Doors open thirty minutes before showtime. This screening is free and open to the public. Presented with support from the Center for Latin American Studies, the University of Chicago Language Center, and the Katz Center for Mexican Studies.
