Luke Fowler is an award-winning, Glasgow-based artist, filmmaker and musician known for his fevered portraits of eccentric outsiders. In this program he presents a current work-in-progress on the charismatic, guru-like figure of R.D. Laing, who suggested that those society labels as mentally ill are in fact “hyper-sane” travelers, conducting an inner voyage through aeonic time. Looking variously at the media representations of psychiatry and Laing’s own shifting viewpoints, Fowler’s new film is constructed with archival material and footage from his own daily life.
Co-presented with Conversations at the Edge, which will present a program of Fowler’s earlier films on Thursday, October 27 at the Gene Siskel Film Center.
