Description:

Introduction by Assistant Professor Jennifer Wild, Department of Cinema and Media Studies

In this melancholic poetic realist melodrama, Marcel Carné (Le quai des brumes; Les enfants du paradis) “replaces a cinema of events with one of people, language, and milieu” (D. Andrew). Two lovers meet in a Parisian hotel determined to commit suicide. They lose their nerve and, subsequently, lose themselves to the atmosphere, cadence, and characters of the Parisian underworld.

(Marcel Carné, France, 1938, 35mm, 95 min)
