Student Resources

At the FSC, students can explore an extensive cinema collection; attend course screenings, workshops, and discussion groups; and find support for course work, research, and independent study.

Explore 100+ years of cinema at the FSC! Our media library of videos, DVDs, and Blu-rays features works from the earliest days of cinematic invention to contemporary Hollywood releases and a bit of everything in between. The collection includes 15,000+ titles in silent film, classic Hollywood cinema, international art house cinema, national cinemas, documentary, experimental and avant-garde film, independent film, animation, and video art, and includes many rare and out of print works. We encourage patrons to explore our catalog holdings and new acquisitions.

Cinema and Media Studies students will find assigned course materials held on reserve in the Center. These materials can be accessed at our circulation desk (Cobb Hall 306) and viewed onsite.

Most students are required to watch materials onsite and the FSC provides two individual viewing rooms equipped with large screen monitors and international/US standard decks in a quiet, study-friendly surrounding. Rooms are available when the Center is open and no reservation is required.

See our access and loan policy for more information.

The FSC partners with the Visual Resources Center to provide digital films clips and stills for presentation and publication.

It's easy to place a request:

    1. Locate materials in the FSC collection.
    2. Choose clips and identify by time stamp.
    3. Fill out the VRC's request form.
    4. Request up to 10 stills/clips per week.

VRC also provides access to films clips through the LUNA database.

The Film Studies Center’s Graduate Student Curatorial Program provides eligible CMS graduate students an opportunity to research, design, and present a public screening. If approved, student curators work with the FSC staff within a prescribed time frame to complete their project. The grant program is open to CMS PhD students who have completed their first year of study and are in good academic standing.

Not finding a title you need in our catalog? Request it! We can help locate materials in other campus collections, or, if the request fits our collection criteria, acquire it for the FSC collection. Please allow sufficient lead time as requests for new titles require at least 1-month turnaround to research, acquire, and catalog.

The FSC works with the office of Student Disability Services to ensure that cinema courses are accessible and inclusive of persons with disabilities. Please reach out to discuss your needs with us.
